The Old Mill Oil on Canvas Panel I have driven past this old mill dozens of times and every time have said out loud “This is a painter's dream” and then kept going where I needed to go, promising to return one day with my paints. It took seemingly forever but I finally made it. Sometimes it is hard to approach something that is “picturesque”. My fear is that it will look too contrived or postcardish. But a promise is a promise and I was going to paint it. The water was very low and made a beautiful curve in the foreground and of course, there is the old building. I could easily spend weeks painting this from all angles. For now I wanted it all. It was a perfect fall day with even, overcast light and a slight chill. Adding to the feel, was a warm cup of coffee and piece of pumpkin loaf bread I had just bought. I set up my easel on some sand and found a good spot to tie my dog, Sully, who graciously accompanied me on this excursion. Within minutes, the owner of the old mill showed up to see what I was up to. He is a delightful old gentleman named Armor. He has owned the property since the 1950's, lives in Auburn, and comes out every day to attend to his garden and property. After telling me some great stories, he headed off to Georgia to celebrate his wedding anniversary. I started work on the painting, and because of the even light, it was progressing at a bit more relaxed pace then when shadows have to be chased. After about an hour, Sully informed me we had visitors. This time it was two employees from Auburn's water board to take samples. I soon found out this stream fills Lake Ogletree which is Auburn's main water supply. For the rest of the painting, I kept thinking how amazing it is that the water that comes out of my taps has to go over this pretty waterfall first. It would make my next shower a very tranquil experience. Toward the end of the painting, I once again had to decide the main focal point of the landscape: a waterfall, a tree, or an old house? These things really should be thought out ahead of time. I included all and thought I would let the viewer make that decision. All I really know is I will be back here to paint again. |
