My painting kit is not the lightest thing; it weighs in at about 40 lbs. Does it have to be so heavy, well no but it is a mini studio incased in an indestructible waterproof box. Put all that into a backpack and I’m ready to go. It is perfect for a short walk from the car to a painting site.
I had planned to go with my Mom to the start of a trail and find a place to paint and she would hike while I painted. When I got to the trail I decided to hike it a bit to find something that inspired me. The trail started very steep and soon I was up on an over look. From there I saw a little lake down in a valley that shone an emerald green. I looked on the trail map and saw that there was a side trail that went there. Sometimes maps can be misleading. It was a long and steep trail that offered no good views of the lake. I finally found my way to the bottom and the campsite. It was a little Shangri La. The lake was surrounded by steep exposed rock on almost all sides.
What caught me was a small still bay filled with dead fall and reflections. It was very quiet, just me and the chatter of red squirrels which were either offering artistic criticism or mad that I had invaded their space.
I felt satisfied with the painting and packed the entire over weight studio pack back together and headed out thinking I need a lighter kit or should take up watercolor.
