Red and Betty Oil on Canvas Panel After my defeat when I last attempted and failed to paint a whole barn full of cows, I felt I needed to redeem myself. This time I would scale the art composition back to include no more than three subjects. I walked around the barn a bit and came across these two cows. They were very relaxed and from my last attempt, I was quickly discovering that painting a relaxed animal is the way to go. These two Brahmas were long-time friends, as their owners informed me, and were pretty much inseparable. They looked it. As I painted them, they got more and more sleepy and would take turns laying their heads on one another. On one side was Red's baby who was very interested in what I was doing and I had to include him. Everything went well until someone drove a forklift down the ally just outside the stall. Red immediately got up to see what was going on. I continued painting Betty and mentally tried to will Red to lie down again. She eventually did. I was visited by many people while I painted, including a clown and the guy who owns the traveling reptile house. The owners of the cows are Larry and Liz Studstill and Family. They had traveled all the way from Florida. I hope both Red and Betty tie for a blue ribbon. |
