Persistence Oil on Gessoed Panel I had only been in America for a year when I painted this. It was a hot Alabama summer and I was trying to cope with a studio that had no way to stay cool. It was built in such a way that once the studio started to heat, would keep that heat like an oven. Even later in the day as evening approached, it would still be hot. In the winter, the studio would do the same with the cold. In a strange way, I still miss the old place. To get out of the studio, I often took my dog for a walk. It was on one of these walks that I noticed these weeds growing out of cracks in the pavement and making beautiful little yellow flowers. I was impressed by nature's persistence. It would not be held back by concrete. I set up my easel in the blazing sun and probably lost a couple of pounds while sweating to capture this image. I never did bother to find out what the weed was. |
