Cottage Lane It was September in Northern Ontario and the leaves were in full color. Every day they became more brilliant and with a hard rain, they came down in a multicolored cascade. The lane leading up to cottage was a narrow one-car-wide path. As the leaves built up, it became a virtual “yellow brick road”. Roads are a painter’s best friend. They are always there to give a nice compositional curve and give a feeling of a journey coming or going. Being such an untraveled lane it was possible to set up right in the middle of the lane and paint. At first it seemed a simple thing to paint until I realized that I had to make sense out of thousands of colored leaves. I retreated into “the painting zone” and let it happen. It is always nice when that happens. My Mom came out to visit me and bring a coffee while I painted. It was the last day in Killarney and the perfect end to a nice trip.
